This week we have a copy of the not yet released brand new title Dennis Stock: American Cool by Tony Nourmand and Graham Marsh to give away, courtesy of Reel Art Press!
Published as a tribute to the timeless legacy of the amazing photographer Dennis Stock during his most celebrated period of the 1950s to the 1970s, this title illustrates his extraordinary ability to capture the essence of the American experience.
James Dean, Times Square New York 1955 by Dennis Stock
In early 1955, Dennis Stock captured one of the iconic images of the 20th century, of the then unknown James Dean walking across a deserted Times Square. The two formed an immediate bond, and Stock went on to take a series of photographs of Dean in New York, Hollywood and Dean's home town of Fairmount, Indiana.
Tragically, Dean died in a car crash in September 1955 and Stock's Times Square image became world famous.
Because of his integrity and his unique style of work, Stock's subjects included Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando and JFK.
In the late 1950s his focus shifted to leading jazz musicians and performers such as Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker; this Reel Art Press edition contains some of his best photographs of these artists.
Another of Stock's iconic images was the one above, of a hippie girl taken at Venice Beach Rock Festival in 1968 - a photograph which demonstrates his ability to capture the counter-culture of the times, from motorcycle gangs, religious communities, policital groups and the late 1960s hippie movement.
